The Purpose of Punishment

In Catholic tradition, the justifications for punishment are fourfold:

  • Retribution
  • Deterrence
  • Security (Defense against the criminal)
  • Rehabilitation

“Punishment, since it involves the deliberate infliction of evil against another, is always in need of justification."

    U.S. Council of Bishops, 1980

  • Andy Warhol
